Traditions in Talladega
by Laura Nation

Public events include a Saturday night concert at The Ritz, featuring two distinctive examples of music that has stood the tests of time.

From Rocky Mount Church in Talladega, church choir members will present their standard style of gospel music to open the evening of entertainment at 7 p.m.

Afterward, the five-member band known as Henri’s Notions will perform their specialty, Celtic influenced music, along with selections from their own compositions.

The group formed in the 1970s while members were attending the University of Alabama, and through the years have performed for concerts and festivals throughout the eastern United States.

Henri’s Notions has performed on stage with Bob Dylan, The Kingston Trio and Richie Havens to name a few top name entertainers they have worked with.

Members of the band include Michael Bowman, who plays fiddle, viola and sings harmony vocals; Jil Chambless, vocalist, who also plays the flute and tin whistles; Steve Lewis, guitarist; Larry Lynch, who plays guitar, mandolin, fiddle and the bouzouki, a string instrument of Greek origin; and Randy Palmer, who plays string bass, bass guitar and the bodhran, an Irish frame drum.
