Noted Young Pianist Performs at Ritz

Talladega’s Historic Ritz Theatre will inaugurate its 2002-2003 seasons with a special music event featuring acclaimed young pianist Makiko Hirata in concert. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. on Monday at the theatre, which is on Talladega’s historic Courthouse Square. During her visit to Talladega, Ms. Hirata wil also give two student concerts in the auditorium of the new Lincoln Elementary School to more than 1,000 students. The arts education initiative is partially funded by a grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
 
The young artist began her piano studies at age 3. She emigrated to the United States to continue her studies at the Juilliard School, where she received the Outstanding Senior award. She received her bachelor of music degree from the Manhattan School of Music and a master’s degree from New York University. She received a standing ovation at her official New York debut at Carnegie Hall.

Ms. Hirata’s concert marks the kickoff of the 2003 Friends of the Ritz Campaign, and all members of 2002 Friends will received complimentary admission.
 
Makiko Hirata will also be in concert with the Hungarian Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Peter Szkladanyi. The concert will be Sept. 26 at 8 p.m. at the Cedartown Civic Auditorium.
